JOANNA FOSTER

Local artist and previous Pittenweem Bursary winner Joanna Foster was awarded the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Scholarship to undertake a fine art practice-led PhD at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design which she completed in 2020.

Connections to nature explored as artist-in-residence with the Dene First Nations community at Sambaa- K’e Print Studio in the Canadian North during her studies, continue to influence Joanna’s practice, as well as an ongoing relationship with the Fife coastline closer to home.

Mediums used to develop movement, light and texture include drawing, painting, printmaking methods of silk-screen, lithography and mono-print, ceramics and the making of artists books. Japanese washi papers, collected ephemera and found natural materials are incorporated for their particular qualities.

Joanna is also an accomplished musician and themes of song and story run through her work. ‘I try to draw out the journey and perspective that comes with being in nature, because the sea is always in motion, and there is something both revitalising and soothing about that.’ Joanna made her undergraduate in Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art and was awarded a Masters with Distinction from DJCAD, with the Masters Prize for practice and research.

‘A series of one-off prints.’ Developed from coastal materials and collected ephemera, layers are collaged during the printing process with lines and brushstrokes drawn directly on the plate.

'Thrown stoneware.’ Japanese tumblers in a reactive glaze reveal finger indentations. Other pieces trace the impression and imprint of natural materials such as pine needles.

'Plein air watercolours made between Pittenweem and St Monans'. Using natural pigments and salt, ‘Water Drawings’ explore movement and light and are hand bound into concertina-fold books.
